This document provides instructions for completing and filing Form 1023-EZ, the streamlined application for tax-exempt status under IRS code section 501(c)(3) for organizations that meet certain eligibility requirements. The form must be filed electronically on Pay.gov and includes sections for providing organizational information, specific activities, foundation classification, and reinstatement after revocation.
The 'Public & Societal Benefit' category includes organizations primarily engaged in providing public or societal benefit, such as public financing agencies, military and veterans’ organizations, and consumer protection organizations.
The 'Religion-Related' category includes organizations primarily engaged in religious activities, including churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and other religious institutions.
The 'Human Services' category includes organizations primarily engaged in providing services to individuals or families in need, such as food banks, homeless shelters, disaster relief organizations, and counseling services.
The 'Education' category includes organizations primarily engaged in operating pre-schools, kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools, colleges, universities, professional schools, museums, libraries, and other educational institutions.
The six major categories of NTEE codes are: Education, Human Services, Religion-Related, Mutual & Membership Benefit, Public & Societal Benefit, and Science & Technology.
The 'Science & Technology' category includes organizations primarily engaged in research, development, testing, or application of scientific principles. This includes organizations focused on physical and earth sciences, biological and life sciences, mathematics, engineering, computer science, and more.
The 'Mutual & Membership Benefit' category includes organizations that offer mutual or membership benefits to their members, such as labor unions, chamber of commerce, and insurance providers.
The National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) is a classification system developed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to help categorize exempt organizations for tax-exempt status determination and data reporting purposes.
