  • What if you can't pay your tax bill?

    If you cannot pay the full amount of your tax bill by the deadline, you should still file your return on time. You can negotiate a payment plan with the IRS or apply for an offer in compromise to settle your tax debt for less than the full amount.

  • What if you owe taxes?

    If you owe taxes, you must pay the full amount due with your Form 1040-PR or with a Form 1040-ES, Electronic Funds Transfer, by April 17th. If you paid too much in estimated taxes for the year, you can request a refund of the overpayment.

  • Do you need to file an extension of time to file?

    You do not need to file for an extension of time if you can file on time. If you cannot file by the deadline, you must file Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

  • What if you want to deduct certain losses?

    If you have a loss from a business or a trade or business, and it is not allowed as a miscellaneous deduction on Schedule A (Form 1040), you must report the loss on Form 8960, Election to Use the Cash Method of Accounting for Income Tax Returns.

  • Do you need to file an amended return?

    If you need to correct a mistake or make changes to your original Form 1040-PR, you must file an amended return using Form 1040X. You should file the amended return as soon as possible after you discover the mistake.

  • What if you have an outstanding balance from a previous year?

    If you owe money from a previous year and have not paid it yet, you must include it with your Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-ES. If you overpaid the amount due for the current year, you can request a refund.

  • When is the deadline to file your tax return?

    The filing deadline for most taxpayers in Puerto Rico is April 15th. However, if you live in a different country and have a different deadline, consult your local revenue agency.

  • Do you need to file a Form 1040-PR?

    Yes, if you are a Puerto Rico resident and have income from sources within Puerto Rico or income from U.S.-connected worldwide sources that is subject to U.S. income tax. You must file a Form 1040-PR even if you do not owe any taxes.
