The instructions provide guidance on how to calculate the tip credit for employers who paid or incurred employer social security and Medicare taxes on certain employee tips. The amount of tips taken into account is reduced by any tips used to meet the federal minimum wage rate, and only wages and tips below the Social Security wage base are included. Employers cannot claim the credit for taxes on tips used to meet the minimum wage rate in effect on January 1, 2007.
