To operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in Alaska, you must meet certain medical and certification requirements. If you engage exclusively in excepted interstate or intrastate operations, you don't need a medical certificate but must self-certify. If you don't meet the federal requirements for a CDL, you can operate under intrastate restrictions. There are two types of operation: interstate and intrastate. Interstate commerce includes transport between one state and another, or between two places in a state through another state or outside the US. Intrastate commerce is any trade, traffic, or transportation within Alaska that doesn't fit the interstate definition. You must self-certify as non-excepted interstate, excepted interstate, non-excepted intrastate, or excepted intrastate depending on your operation type and qualifications. To self-certify, submit Form DOT FMCSA 5102.3 with the correct information to the DMV.
