Inspection Checklist: Unconventional Vehicles

Self-certify that a non-conforming light vehicle is street legal and equipped for operation on the highways.

Montana law mandates specific vehicle equipment for highway use. Vehicles need head lamps, tail lamps, reflectors, stop lamps, brakes, horn, mufflers, mirrors, tires, minimum speed indicators, fenders or splash aprons, and seatbelts. Head lamps: must be positioned between 24-54 inches from the ground, with high beam projecting 350 feet and low beam 100 feet. Tail lamps: required to have at least one red tail lamp visible from 500 feet, a white light for the rear plate, and be positioned between 15-72 inches from the ground. Reflectors: must have two red reflectors, positioned between 15-60 inches from the ground. Stop lamps: should incorporate stop lamp into tail lamp, be red, and visible from 300 feet. Brakes: vehicles must be equipped with brakes on all wheels that meet federal standards and MCA Title 61, Chapter 9.6. Horn: cannot be excessively loud or a whistle, audible from at least 200 feet, and controllable by the driver. Mufflers: muffler system must prevent noise and smoke. Mirror: one mirror to reflect a rear view of at least 200 ft. Tires: solid rubber tires or low-pressure pneumatic tires required, with no metal tires. Minimum Speed: vehicles unable to travel more than 25 mph must display a slow-moving vehicle sign. Fenders, splash aprons, or flaps: rear wheels must be equipped with these components. Seatbelts: vehicles must comply with MCA Title 61, Chapter 9.
