This document outlines the eligibility, possession and exhibition, validity, cancellation, revocation, mounting, and prohibited use of permits for installing and using blue emergency warning lights in New Jersey. Eligibility is limited to active volunteers in good standing of a volunteer fire company, first aid or rescue squad, or county or municipal Office of Emergency Management. Permits are valid for four years and must be surrendered when the volunteer ceases to be an active member. Blue lights can be flashing or revolving, equipped with a blue lens, controlled by a switch inside the vehicle, or mounted on the windshield columns or roof. One light must be in the center of the roof or front of the vehicle, and two lights may be placed on opposite sides. No alternative flashing or strobe headlights are allowed. Blue emergency warning lights can only be used when the vehicle is responding to an emergency.
